A2🔤 Letters I & L

Italian word

lira

lira (former Italian currency); lyre (musical instrument)

Looks like

liar

a person who tells lies

⚠️ The trap

'Lira' has nothing to do with 'liar'. 'Non avere una lira' = 'to be broke / to be penniless' (the phrase survives even after the euro replaced the lira). 'A liar' in Italian is 'un bugiardo / una bugiarda'.

To say "a person who tells lies" in Italian:

bugiardo/a (liar); lira (currency/lyre)

"lira" in English means:

lira (former Italian currency); lyre (musical instrument)

Example

"Non ho una lira!"

"I haven't got a penny! (literally: I don't have a lira!)"
