To say "a short novel (longer than a short story, shorter than a novel)" in Italian:

racconto lungo / romanzo breve (for a novella in the English sense)

"novella" in English means:

short story (a piece of short fiction); also news (archaic)

Example

"Boccaccio scrisse cento novelle nel Decameron."

"Boccaccio wrote one hundred short stories in the Decameron."
