Padre is the formal/literary word. In everyday speech, Italians use papà (dad). 'Padre' is also used for priests (Catholic priest = padre). Both forms are correct and widely understood.
Mio padre lavora come medico da vent'anni.
My father has worked as a doctor for twenty years.
Il padre accompagna i figli a scuola ogni mattina.
The father takes the children to school every morning.
