The tradition of wearing black (portare il lutto) for months or years after a bereavement is still practised, especially in southern Italy. 'Le mie condoglianze' (my condolences) is the formal expression of sympathy.

The family is in mourning after grandfather's death.
Portare il lutto significa indossare abiti neri.
To wear mourning means to wear black clothing.
