Cultural Note

Similar to 'scemo' but implies someone is being slow on the uptake rather than outright stupid. Among friends, it's used when someone doesn't get a joke or misses something obvious. 'Fare il tonto' (to play dumb) is a very common expression — often used when you know your friend understood but is pretending not to.
