Every new broom sweeps well — novelty brings enthusiasm and effectiveness, but neither necessarily lasts. It can be a warning that what seems impressive at first may prove ordinary over time, or a comment on how new leaders or employees perform well initially out of eagerness.
The straw brooms of Sicily — the scupa — were made from Sorghum stalks and wore out quickly under the demands of sweeping stone and tile floors. A new broom had all its bristles intact, swept cleanly, and made quick work of the dirt. An old one shed its straw, left traces behind it, and required twice the effort for half the result. The proverb was applied to marriages, to new mayors and landlords, to new priests and teachers: everyone is full of zeal at the beginning, everyone promises to do things differently. Sicily had seen so many new rulers — Arab, Norman, Swabian, Angevin, Aragonese, Spanish, Bourbon, Italian — that the people had developed a specific, ironic wisdom about the gap between opening speeches and long-term reality. The new broom sweeps well; what matters is what it does when it gets old.
Widespread across Italian dialects but the Sicilian form ('scupa', 'spazza beni') is documented in Pitrè's collections. In Sicily it carries particular irony given the island's experience of dozens of different ruling powers, each promising renewal.
Scepticism about a new manager's early reforms
— Il nuovo direttore sta già cambiando tutto. — Ogni scupa nova spazza beni — aspetta sei mesi e vediamo.
— The new manager is already changing everything. — Every new broom sweeps well — wait six months and we will see.
A new employee who is performing brilliantly in their first weeks
Adesso è bravissima, certo. Ogni scupa nova spazza beni — il vero test viene dopo.
Right now she is excellent, of course. Every new broom sweeps well — the real test comes later.
After a new relationship begins very strongly
Sono felicissimi adesso, si vedono ogni giorno. Ogni scupa nova spazza beni — tra un anno sarà diverso.
They are very happy now, they see each other every day. Every new broom sweeps well — in a year it will be different.
Reflecting on a political election
Il nuovo sindaco ha fatto cose buone nel primo anno. Ogni scupa nova spazza beni — mio padre diceva così di tutti i sindaci.
The new mayor did good things in the first year. Every new broom sweeps well — my father said that about every mayor.
