No proverb in the Sicilian tradition is more charged with historical meaning than this one. Omertà — the code of silence — was not invented by the Mafia: it predates it by centuries, rooted in the experience of a population that had learned, under successive foreign rulers, that speaking to authorities brought no justice and considerable danger. The informer was the most despised figure in the community not out of criminality but out of a rational assessment that the state could not be trusted. Silence was the community's self-defence. But the proverb also lived in ordinary domestic and social life: the neighbour who knew how to keep a secret, the wife who did not repeat what she heard, the man who could be told something in confidence and carry it to his grave — these were the people most respected and trusted.
