Non si po' sonare e portare la cruci

You cannot play the music and carry the cross at the same time — it is impossible to perform two incompatible roles simultaneously. One must choose between leading and following, between celebrating and mourning, between two opposing obligations.

The Story Behind It

The proverb draws from the vivid reality of Sicilian religious processions, which are among the most dramatic in Catholic Europe. During Holy Week — the Settimana Santa — the streets of towns like Trapani, Enna, and Marsala fill with hooded confraternities carrying sacred statues through the night, accompanied by mournful brass bands. The musicians who played the dirges could not also carry the heavy wooden platforms bearing the crucifixes and sacred images: the roles were distinct, requiring different physical and spiritual postures. The procession was ordered, hierarchical, and each person had their assigned role. To attempt both was to fail at both — and worse, to dishonour the ceremony. The proverb generalised from this liturgical reality to all of life's divided loyalties: a man could not be both master and servant, both judge and criminal, both parent and peer.

Rooted in the culture of Sicilian religious processions, particularly the elaborate Holy Week ceremonies of Trapani, Enna, and Marsala. The dual roles of musician and cross-bearer provided a vivid metaphor for incompatible obligations.
