Ringworm can be cured, but character never — illness, however stubborn, can be treated; but fundamental character cannot be changed. Stubbornness, cruelty, laziness, or generosity — these are as fixed as bone. The proverb counsels acceptance of what is immovable in human nature.
Ringworm ('tigna') was one of the most stubborn skin conditions of pre-antibiotic Sicily — persistent, contagious, difficult to treat, but ultimately curable. The Sicilian folk pharmacopoeia had many remedies for it, and it was eventually always resolved. Character, by contrast — 'lu caratteri' — was seen as entirely beyond treatment. This was the Sicilian version of 'the leopard cannot change its spots,' but more specific: the comparison to a medical condition emphasised that character was not a moral failure but a physical fact, as immovable as the structure of the bones or the colour of the eyes. The proverb was used to stop people from wasting energy trying to change what could not be changed — particularly in the context of difficult relatives whose problematic behaviour was structural rather than situational.
A Sicilian proverb about the immutability of character, using the contrast between a curable skin disease and the incurable nature of fundamental character. 'Tigna' = tigna (ringworm), 'caratteri' = carattere (character). Widely collected in folk archives across Sicily.
