When the nets were full, the 'rais' (the master fisherman, a title preserved from the Arab era) gave the signal, and the fishermen hauled the giant tuna into the killing chamber, stabbing them with long hooks. The sea turned red. The ritual had its own songs, its own prayers, its own hierarchy. It was not casual killing but a ceremony acknowledging the taking of life. The proverb uses this image to say: some aspects of reality are brutal but true, and accepting them honestly is better than looking away.
