L'omini si pesanu, non si contanu

Men are weighed, not counted — quality over quantity in human affairs. The number of allies, supporters, or friends matters less than their weight — their character, reliability, and substance. One person of real quality is worth a hundred of hollow ones.

The Story Behind It

Sicily's political and social history was full of examples of this truth. Moments when a single person of genuine integrity altered the course of events — the magistrate who refused to be bribed, the farmer who stood up to the landlord, the woman who testified despite the threats. These single people 'weighed' more than entire crowds of compliant others. The proverb also applied to military thinking, family strategy, and business: a small number of reliable partners was worth more than a large alliance of unreliables. It was the Sicilian answer to the democratic fallacy that numbers alone determined strength. Quality, substance, character — these were the weights that mattered. 'Omini' = uomini (men/people).

A Sicilian proverb about quality over quantity in human alliances and relationships. 'Omini' = uomini (men), 'pesanu' = pesano (are weighed). Reflects the Sicilian preference for small circles of genuine trust over large crowds of uncertain reliability.
