Cu dorme non piglia pesci

He who sleeps catches no fish — opportunity belongs to those who are awake, alert, and ready. Laziness and inattention let what could be yours slip past. A motivational proverb used especially in fishing communities where the best catch required rising before dawn.

The Story Behind It

The Sicilian fishing tradition is ancient and intimate — communities like Mazara del Vallo, Sciacca, and Porticello have lived by the sea for millennia, their rhythms dictated by tides, winds, and seasons. The serious fisherman rose hours before dawn, read the sky, prepared his nets, and was out on the water while his neighbours slept. The best fish — the swordfish in the Strait of Messina, the tuna in the channel between Sicily and Africa — required timing, patience, and most importantly, wakefulness. The proverb spread from the docks to every other area of Sicilian life: commerce, farming, romance, education. It is the island's answer to the question of why some succeed and others do not. Not luck, not birth — simply who was awake when the moment arrived. Today it is used by Sicilian parents to get teenagers out of bed and by businesspeople who missed an opportunity while a competitor moved faster.

Rooted in Sicilian maritime culture, particularly the fishing communities of the western and southern coasts. 'Cu dorme' = chi dorme, 'piglia' = prende. Equivalent to English 'the early bird catches the worm.'
