Davanti ai vecchi, la lingua va a riposo.

In the presence of elders, the tongue rests. The proverb expresses the deep respect owed to older people in Pugliese culture — in their presence, the young are expected to listen rather than speak. Silence is not submission but active honor.

The Story Behind It

In the hierarchical social structure of the traditional Pugliese masseria and village, age commanded absolute deference. The capomasseria (estate manager), usually the oldest and most experienced figure on the farm, spoke last and his words ended all debate. In village life, the piazza was a space where old men gathered in the evening (the passeggiata), and their conversations were treated as communal history — a living archive of collective memory. This respect for elders had practical roots: in a society without written records or formal education, elderly people were the repositories of agricultural knowledge, meteorological lore, legal memory, and family genealogy. To interrupt or contradict an elder publicly was a serious breach of honor that could affect a young person's social standing for years.

Reflects the hierarchical respect for elders embedded in the social structure of the masseria and Pugliese village life.
