When the tambourine sounds, the feet cannot stay still. The tambureddha (tambourine) is the central instrument of the pizzica tarantata, the dance music of the Salento. The proverb states that its rhythm is physically irresistible — the body responds before the mind can intervene.
The tambureddha — the Salentino frame drum — is not simply a musical instrument but the heartbeat of a ritual tradition. Its use in the tarantism ceremonies was precise: specific rhythms were believed to resonate with the poison of the spider and either release or increase its power, depending on the dancer's response. The musicians who played at these healing sessions were semi-sacred figures. The modern pizzica revival, which began in the 1990s and culminated in the creation of the Notte della Taranta festival in Melpignano in 1998, has reframed the tambourine from therapeutic instrument to identity symbol. Every August, nearly 100,000 people gather in the small town of Melpignano for the concert finale — one of the largest folk music events in Europe. The proverb is now quoted at every festival as a declaration: the music compels.
