A fé 'l ben ai trist, al venta mai

Doing good to the wicked is never wasted. Even those who seem undeserving of kindness may be transformed by it — generosity toward the difficult is its own moral reward.

The Story Behind It

Piedmontese Catholicism, shaped by the Waldensian Protestant minority's moral rigour and the Counter-Reformation energy of figures like San Francesco di Sales (born near Annecy in Savoy territory), placed strong emphasis on active charity rather than passive piety. San Giovanni Bosco, born in 1815 near Asti, built his entire educational mission — the Salesian order — on the principle that the most abandoned and apparently irredeemable young people (the trist, the wicked, the difficult) were exactly those most in need of and most transformed by generous attention. The Oratorio Salesiano in Turin became a model for Catholic social work worldwide precisely because it refused to write off the worst cases. This proverb captures that theological conviction in vernacular form: goodness directed at the difficult is not wasted but planted as seed in the hardest ground.

Rooted in the Salesain tradition of Don Bosco (1815–1888, Asti, Piedmont) who built his educational mission on this principle; the Waldensian moral tradition of active charity in the alpine valleys reinforced this Piedmontese ethical emphasis.
