Non si può avere la botte piena e la moglie ubriaca

You cannot have everything at once; some things are mutually exclusive. You must choose between two desirable but incompatible things.

The Story Behind It

The barrel (botte) is central to Italian wine culture, and the image of a barrel that is simultaneously full (piena) and whose wine has been drunk to intoxication (moglie ubriaca) is a comic logical impossibility: if the wife has drunk enough to be drunk, the barrel must be at least partly empty. The proverb therefore uses a very Italian domestic scene — wine, the barrel, the household — to illustrate the universal logical principle that you cannot simultaneously have something and have consumed it. It is one of the most characteristically Italian proverbs, beloved for its humor and specificity. The saying is recorded from the sixteenth century onward and is remarkably stable in its wording across centuries, suggesting a fixed oral tradition. The 'wife' in the proverb is not necessarily critical of women; she is simply the household member most plausibly associated with domestic wine consumption in the comic imagination of the era. The English 'You can't have your cake and eat it too' expresses exactly the same logical impossibility using a different domestic image.

One of the most distinctively Italian proverbs; wine barrel imagery reflects the centrality of viticulture to Italian rural economy and culture.
