Il tempo è galantuomo

Time is a gentleman — it eventually reveals the truth and delivers justice. In the long run, things will be set right and people will be judged fairly.

The Story Behind It

The concept of the galantuomo — a man of honour and good faith who keeps his word and deals fairly — was central to the Italian social code, particularly in the nineteenth century when the Risorgimento generated intense debate about civic virtue. Calling time a galantuomo was therefore a powerful metaphor: it attributed to the passage of time the same reliable, just character as an honourable man. The proverb implies that temporary injustice, false reputations, and concealed truths will all eventually be corrected by the neutral passage of time. It is used both to console someone who has been wronged and who must wait for vindication, and as a warning to those who think they have successfully hidden their misdeeds. The saying is documented in Italian from the eighteenth century onward and became especially popular during the politically turbulent Risorgimento years, when many Italians felt that historical justice was being slowly worked out over decades. In contemporary Italy it is often used with a slightly melancholy patience, acknowledging that justice may come, but it takes its time.

The 'galantuomo' concept was central to nineteenth-century Risorgimento civic ethics; the proverb gained currency in politically turbulent eras when patient justice seemed necessary.
