Il buon giorno si vede dal mattino

The way something begins reveals how it will develop. Early signs indicate the likely outcome of a situation.

The Story Behind It

This proverb draws on the Italian rural tradition of reading natural signs — weather, light, birdsong — at the start of the day to predict what was to come. A clear, bright morning with the right wind direction was a reliable predictor of good weather and a productive day's work in the fields or at sea. By extension, the proverb became a general statement about how early indicators — in a person's character, a business venture, a relationship, or a day's work — predict future outcomes. It is documented in Italian collections from at least the seventeenth century and is consistently one of the most quoted proverbs in the language. Italian parents and teachers use it to encourage children to start well: if a student begins an exam confidently, if a craftsman starts a job carefully, the outcome is likely to be good. It can also be used critically, when early signs suggest a poor outcome. The proverb implicitly endorses first impressions and initial effort as reliable guides, a perspective that modern cognitive science has partly confirmed through research on the predictive value of brief exposures to situations.

Rooted in Italian rural tradition of reading natural morning signs; first recorded in printed form in the 1600s.
