La vita l'è curt e l'art l'è lung

Life is short and art is long — mastery of any craft requires far more time than a human life easily provides. The dedication required to truly master an art is humbling.

The Story Behind It

This proverb derives from the Hippocratic aphorism Ars longa, vita brevis, which arrived in Lombard culture through the Renaissance humanism that Milan absorbed so deeply during the Sforza period. Leonardo da Vinci, who spent seventeen years in Milan, embodied this truth: his notebooks show the terrifying disproportion between what he wanted to understand and what any one life could contain. In Cremona, where luthiers spent their lives mastering an art that required decades before a practitioner was considered genuinely accomplished, the proverb was literally true: the great luthiers of the Stradivari tradition did not reach their peak until their fifties or sixties. In Milan's fashion and design industries, the same truth applies: true mastery is a life's work, not a season's effort.
