Hope is the last to die — even in the most extreme circumstances, hope persists longest. As long as there is life, there is hope; and as long as there is hope, there is life.
This proverb (from the classical Latin Dum spiro, spero) became deeply embedded in Lombard culture through both the Christian tradition and the hard historical experience of a region that suffered plague, foreign occupation, famine, and industrial devastation multiple times and always recovered. Milan was devastated by the plague of 1630 (documented by Manzoni in the Promessi Sposi) and by the Second World War bombing that destroyed much of the historic city, and each time it rebuilt. The rebuilding was possible because hope — stubborn, unreasonable, sometimes absurd — refused to die before the circumstances had been fully resolved. The proverb is used both as genuine consolation in extreme situations and as a gentle irony about stubborn optimism in hopeless ones.
Lombard version of the universal proverb (Latin: dum spiro, spero). Milan's repeated recoveries from catastrophe — plague, war, economic collapse — gave this saying particular experiential weight.
