Chi semina vento raccoglie tempesta

He who sows wind reaps storm — reckless actions have consequences far greater than intended. Those who cause trouble will face a much larger reckoning.

The Story Behind It

This biblical proverb (from Hosea 8:7) took deep root in the agricultural communities of the Po Valley, where the relationship between sowing and harvest was the rhythm of life. For the Lombard farmer, the metaphor was visceral: the winds that came off the Alps and swept across the plain could flatten a wheat field in an hour, and a farmer who had been negligent in any aspect of his work felt the consequences at harvest time. The proverb carries a moral weight beyond agriculture: in the mercantile culture of Milan, the businessman who cheated partners, the politician who made false promises, the factory owner who mistreated workers — all were eventually exposed to the storm they had created. In family life it warns against sowing discord: the gossip who sets siblings against each other eventually faces the family's collective anger.

Biblical proverb (Hosea 8:7) deeply embedded in Lombard agricultural culture. Found across Italy and northern Europe.
