Garbatella: cuore rosso, pancia piena

Garbatella: red heart, full belly — a characterization of the Garbatella neighborhood as both politically left-wing (red heart) and committed to the pleasures of eating (full belly). Used to celebrate the neighborhood's working-class identity and to contrast it with more bourgeois Roman districts.

The Story Behind It

Garbatella is a garden suburb built in the 1920s in the southern part of Rome, originally designed as workers' housing using the English garden city model. Its name — 'the gracious girl' — comes from a local legend about a hospitable innkeeper's daughter who lived there before construction began. The neighborhood was built to house workers displaced by Mussolini's demolitions in the historic center, and its residents developed a strong communist and socialist political identity that persisted through the postwar decades and into the present. The PCI (Italian Communist Party) maintained its strongest Roman base in Garbatella and the surrounding Ostiense area. The neighborhood's 'lottizzazioni' — clusters of multi-story apartment buildings around shared courtyards — created an intensely communal social life of shared meals, political meetings, and neighborhood festivals. 'Cuore rosso, pancia piena' captures both the political and culinary dimensions of this identity.

Garbatella was founded in 1920 as part of Rome's first systematic public housing program, with the initial buildings designed in a vernacular neo-Renaissance style by architects Innocenzo Sabbatini and Gustavo Giovannoni. The garden city model — imported from Ebenezer Howard's British planning theory — was adapted to create the neighborhood's distinctive 'alveari' (hive-like courtyard clusters) that generated its communal social culture.
