Can I suggest the route?
'Suggerire' — 'sud-je-RI-re'. Four syllables; 'gg' before 'e' gives a soft 'j' sound.
Use when you know the city and have a specific preferred route — perhaps to avoid a toll, take a scenic road, or because you know a faster way.
'Suggerire' means to suggest. 'Posso' is the first-person singular of 'potere'. Italian taxi drivers are generally open to route suggestions from passengers who clearly know the area.
Preferisco passare per la costa.
I prefer to go along the coast.
States your preference directly.
Eviti l'autostrada, per favore.
Please avoid the motorway.
Useful if you do not want to pay the toll or prefer a scenic route.
Prenda la strada panoramica.
Take the scenic road.
Proactive suggestion for a more enjoyable journey.
Italian taxi drivers rarely take offence at route suggestions — in fact, many welcome local knowledge. However, if they strongly disagree with your route (e.g., it is slower or involves a toll they must front), they will say so politely.
