A2

Questa macchina va a benzina o a gasolio?

Does this car run on petrol or diesel?

Pronunciation

ben-ZI-na — stress on second syllable. ga-SO-lio — stress on second syllable.

When to use it

Before driving away with the rental car, to ensure you put the right fuel in.

What it means

'Benzina' (petrol/gasoline) vs 'gasolio' (diesel). Using the wrong fuel type is a serious and expensive mistake. Always check. Italian petrol stations have colour-coded pumps: green for benzina, black for gasolio. Electric cars (elettrica) and hybrids are increasingly common in rentals.

Mini Dialogue

— Questa macchina va a benzina o a gasolio? — Gasolio. È molto importante — se mette benzina, dobbiamo svuotare il serbatoio. — Grazie per l'avvertimento. Come si capisce dalla pompa? — Le pompe del gasolio sono nere. Non confonda con quelle verdi della benzina.

— Does this car run on petrol or diesel? — Diesel. This is very important — if you put in petrol, we have to drain the tank. — Thanks for the warning. How do I tell from the pump? — Diesel pumps are black. Don't confuse them with the green ones for petrol.

Cultural Note

Misfuelling (putting the wrong fuel in) is more common than you might think — especially for travellers from countries where diesel is rare (USA) or where pumps are colour-coded differently. Italian pumps: verde (green) = benzina; nero (black) = gasolio; blue = gas. Many modern diesel cars also have a misfuelling preventer device in the fuel cap.
