How does the receipt lottery work?

Ask if you are new to Italy or if a cashier mentions 'codice lotteria'. The receipt lottery was introduced to incentivise customers to request fiscal receipts, fighting tax evasion.
The 'Lotteria degli Scontrini' gives prize entries for each euro spent, provided you share your 'codice lotteria' (lottery code) at the till. The code is obtained free from the government website (lotteriadeglistrontrini.gov.it). Prizes are drawn weekly, monthly, and annually.
