Can I put the suitcases up here?

Pronunciation

va-LI-gie — stress on second syllable. so-PRA — stress on second syllable.

When to use it

When boarding with luggage and asking to use the overhead rack above other passengers.

What it means

'Qui sopra' (up here) refers to the overhead luggage rack (portabagagli). 'Mettere le valigie' (to put the suitcases). Italian regional trains have overhead racks; high-speed trains have racks between seat pairs. Heavy or large bags should go in the end-of-carriage storage area.

Variations

Is there space for the large suitcase?

Large bags belong in the dedicated luggage area at the end of the carriage

Posso mettere il trolley nell'apposito spazio?

Can I put the trolley in the dedicated space?

End-of-carriage areas are designated for large luggage

La mia borsa è pesante — può aiutarmi?

Mini Dialogue

— Posso mettere le valigie qui sopra? — La borsa piccola sì, ma la valigia grande va nell'apposito spazio in fondo. — Dove esattamente? — All'ingresso del vagone, a sinistra. C'è un portabagagli verticale.

— Can I put the suitcases up here? — The small bag yes, but the large suitcase goes in the dedicated space at the end. — Where exactly? — At the entrance to the carriage, on the left. There is a vertical luggage rack.

Cultural Note

Italian high-speed trains have dedicated luggage storage areas at the ends of each carriage for large suitcases. These are first come first served. Overhead racks are for smaller bags and backpacks. Very large bags (those not fitting in the overhead) left in the aisle are a safety hazard and the inspector may ask you to move them.
