EU pet travel within member states requires: ISO microchip (15-digit), rabies vaccination, EU Pet Passport (Passaporto Europeo per Animali). The EU passport is issued by a veterinarian and records microchip number, vaccinations and tapeworm treatments. Travel to the UK now requires additional steps (tapeworm treatment, blood titre test for rabies). Italy also allows internal travel without passport but with a chip.

The TRACES system (Trade Control and Expert System) tracks animal movements within the EU. Italy's island regions (Sicily, Sardinia) do not have additional requirements for pets travelling from mainland Italy.
