Cultural Note

La Traviata (1853) is based on La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils. Verdi's opera transformed the morally ambiguous protagonist into one of the most sympathetic heroines in all opera. The opera was initially booed at its premiere in Venice but became one of the most-performed operas in the world.
