When to use it

If you want to complete an advance directive (living will) during your hospital stay. Particularly relevant for serious diagnoses.

What it means

'Disposizioni anticipate di trattamento' (DAT) = advance directives / living will. Legalised in Italy by Law 219/2017. You can document your wishes about future medical treatment in case you lose capacity to decide. Must be registered with the municipality ('comune') or healthcare provider. A 'fiduciario' (healthcare proxy) can also be appointed.

Variations

I want to appoint a healthcare proxy for my medical decisions.

'Fiduciario' = trusted person who makes decisions on your behalf if incapacitated

Le DAT si possono cambiare in futuro?

Yes — they can be updated or revoked at any time while you have capacity

Dove si depositano le disposizioni anticipate?

At the municipality ('comune') or with a notary ('notaio') — Italy is building a national registry

Cultural Note

Italy legalised advance directives ('DAT') in 2017 after years of politically charged debate (the Eluana Englaro case 2009 was a turning point). Italy is building a national registry ('Registro Nazionale delle DAT') where citizens can register their advance directives. Currently, they can be deposited with the municipality of residence or given to your doctor. The Church's opposition influenced the law's religious conscience clause — doctors can object to carrying out DAT under certain conditions.
