What is your fitness goal?
Stress 'o-biet-TI-vo'. 'Fitness' is borrowed from English and pronounced as in English.
Ask this to start a conversation with a gym buddy or to understand a training partner's goals. Trainers ask this at the beginning of every client relationship.
'Obiettivo' = objective/goal. 'Di fitness' = of/related to fitness. 'Qual è' = what is (used for singular nouns). This is an open question that invites a detailed response. Italian trainers often use the SMART goal framework in Italian: 'obiettivi Specifici, Misurabili, Achievable, Realistici, Temporali'.

Italian fitness culture increasingly values 'benessere' (wellbeing) over pure aesthetics. Influenced by the Mediterranean lifestyle, many Italians train to feel better and live longer ('invecchiare bene') rather than purely for appearance — a shift reflected in how trainers now discuss goals.
