Il film è adatto ai bambini?

Is the film suitable for children?

Pronunciation

a-DAT-to — double 't', stress on second syllable.

When to use it

Ask before buying tickets when attending with children. Essential for parents unsure about age ratings. Cinema staff can explain the Italian rating system.

What it means

Italy uses an age rating system managed by the Ministry of Culture: 'per tutti' (all ages), 'non adatto ai minori di 6 anni', '14 anni', '18 anni'. The system was modernized in 2021. Unlike the UK or US, there is no 12A equivalent — categories are fixed minimum ages.

Variations

Da che età è consigliato?

From what age is it recommended?

Asks for the suggested minimum age rather than formal rating.

Ci sono scene violente o inappropriate?

Are there violent or inappropriate scenes?

More specific concern for sensitive children.

È vietato ai minori di quattordici anni?

Is it prohibited for under-14s?

Asks directly about the 14+ category.

Mini Dialogue

— Buongiorno, il film di animazione è adatto ai bambini piccoli? — Sì, è vietato ai minori di zero anni — è per tutti. Anche i bambini piccoli possono entrare. — Quanti anni ha suo figlio? — Cinque anni. — Perfetto, andrà benissimo.

— Good morning, is the animated film suitable for young children? — Yes, it's rated for all ages — everyone can enter. Even young children can come in. — How old is your son? — Five years old. — Perfect, it will be absolutely fine.

Cultural Note

Italy has a long tradition of quality domestic animation and dubbed foreign cartoons. Saturday and Sunday morning screenings are specifically aimed at families — called 'spettacoli per famiglie'.
