How does the monthly pass work?
'Abbonamento' — 'ab-bo-na-MEN-to'. Five syllables; stress on the fourth.
Ask at a ticket office or a well-informed fellow passenger when you plan to stay for a month or more and want to save money on daily tickets.
'Come funziona' means 'how does it work'. 'Abbonamento' (subscription/pass) can be mensile (monthly), settimanale (weekly), or annuale (annual). Most Italian cities require a photo-ID card to load the pass.

Italian monthly passes are loaded onto a 'tessera' (card) linked to your identity. Losing it means proving your identity to get a replacement, so always keep it separate from your wallet.
