Can you help me find the right size?
'Aiutare' — a-yu-TA-re. Four syllables.
Use when you are confused about Italian sizing or when a garment is fitting oddly. Inviting staff to help is the best use of their expertise — Italian shop assistants are usually genuinely knowledgeable.
'Mi può aiutare' — 'can you help me' (formal 'lei' form). 'A trovare' — 'to find' ('trovare' follows 'aiutare' with 'a'). 'La taglia giusta' — the right size. This polite, open-ended request invites the staff member to take the lead.
Non so che taglia prendere.
I don't know what size to take.
States the problem directly.
Cosa mi consiglia?
What do you recommend?
Open recommendation request.
Mi dà un consiglio sulle taglie?
Can you give me advice on sizes?
Asks specifically for sizing advice.
Italian shop assistants in fashion boutiques often receive training in personal styling and customer service. In smaller boutiques ('negozi di moda'), the owner may personally help you — and their expertise is often exceptional. Accepting their help is culturally appropriate and usually productive.
