Emphatic Structures — Strutture Enfatiche·Proprio as Emphatic Intensifier
💡

Rule reminder

'Proprio' functions as a powerful emphatic intensifier in Italian. Key fixed expressions: 'Proprio no' (absolutely not), 'Proprio così' (exactly so / precisely), 'Proprio lui/lei' (him/her specifically), 'È proprio vero' (it's absolutely true), 'Non voglio proprio' (I really don't want to), 'Proprio adesso?' (Right now?). 'Proprio' can precede adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and pronouns. It often translates as 'really', 'absolutely', 'exactly', or 'precisely'. It differs from 'molto' (quantity) by emphasising identity or truth rather than degree.
