Italian infinitives can be used as nouns with or without the definite article. As subject: 'Il viaggiare stanca.' / 'Viaggiare stanca.' As object: 'Amo leggere.' After prepositions, the infinitive is always used (not a noun): 'prima di partire', 'senza sapere'. In formal written Italian, the infinitive-as-noun (with article) gives an abstract, elevated tone: 'Lo studiare richiede disciplina.'
