Even common verbs like 'usare' (to use) and 'comprare' (to buy) have formal or precise synonyms: 'utilizzare' (to use/utilise — more formal), 'impiegare' (to employ, to use — for time, resources, people), 'adoperare' (to use — slightly dated/literary), 'servirsi di' (to make use of, to avail oneself of), 'acquistare' (to purchase — formal), 'procurarsi' (to obtain, to get hold of), 'approvvigionarsi' (to source, to stock up — very formal). Register and connotation vary widely.
