Rule reminder
Use 'il quale' (and its forms) instead of 'che' when there are two possible antecedents and the gender agreement of 'il quale' removes the ambiguity. In unambiguous contexts, 'che' is equally correct but 'il quale' is more formal.
Abbiamo sentito la testimonianza del figlio della vittima, ___ era presente quella notte.
