Stare + Gerundio

The Lesson

What Is Stare + Gerundio?

The construction stare + gerundio is the Italian equivalent of the English present continuous (to be + -ing). It expresses an action that is happening right now, at this very moment. While the simple present in Italian can describe habitual actions or general truths, stare + gerundio emphasizes that something is actively in progress: 'Sto mangiando.' (I am eating — right now.) vs 'Mangio.' (I eat — in general, or as a habit.)

How to Form the Gerundio

The gerundio (gerund) is formed from the infinitive stem: - Verbs ending in -ARE: remove -are and add -ANDO → parlare → parlando, mangiare → mangiando, lavorare → lavorando, guardare → guardando - Verbs ending in -ERE: remove -ere and add -ENDO → leggere → leggendo, scrivere → scrivendo, correre → correndo - Verbs ending in -IRE: remove -ire and add -ENDO → dormire → dormendo, partire → partendo, finire → finendo The gerundio never changes for person or number — it is always the same form regardless of subject.

  • Marco sta leggendo un libro.Marco is reading a book.
  • Stiamo aspettando l'autobus. We are waiting for the bus.

Stare + Gerundio in the Imperfetto

Stare can also be conjugated in the imperfetto to describe an action that was in progress at a specific moment in the past. This is the Italian equivalent of English 'was/were doing': - stavo + gerundio = I was doing - stavi + gerundio = you were doing - stava + gerundio = he/she was doing - stavamo + gerundio = we were doing - stavate + gerundio = you all were doing - stavano + gerundio = they were doing This structure is often used with 'quando' to express an interrupted background action: 'Stavo dormendo quando il telefono ha squillato.' (I was sleeping when the phone rang.) The imperfect stare + gerundio sets the ongoing background action, while the passato prossimo interrupts it.

Pronoun Placement with Gerundio

When using stare + gerundio with object pronouns (lo, la, li, le, mi, ti, ci, vi), you have TWO equally correct options: 1. The pronoun can be ATTACHED to the end of the gerundio: 'Sto mangiandolo.' (I am eating it.) 2. The pronoun can go BEFORE stare: 'Lo sto mangiando.' (I am eating it.) Both are correct and interchangeable. The version with the pronoun before stare is slightly more common in spoken Italian. Examples: - Lo sto leggendo. / Sto leggendolo. — I am reading it. - La sta chiamando. / Sta chiamandola. — He is calling her. - Ti sto ascoltando. / Sto ascoltandoti. — I am listening to you.

Simple Present vs Stare + Gerundio

The key difference: use the SIMPLE PRESENT for habits, routines, and general truths; use STARE + GERUNDIO for actions happening at this very moment. - 'Leggo ogni giorno.' → I read every day. (habit) vs 'Sto leggendo adesso.' → I am reading right now. (in progress) - 'Mangio la pasta.' → I eat pasta. (general habit) vs 'Sto mangiando la pasta.' → I am eating the pasta. (right now) - 'Studio l'italiano.' → I study Italian. (general) vs 'Sto studiando l'italiano.' → I am studying Italian. (at this moment) Time expressions like 'adesso', 'in questo momento', 'ora', 'proprio adesso' signal that stare + gerundio is needed.
