Common Irregular Verbs

The Lesson

Introduction

Irregular verbs do not follow the standard -are, -ere, or -ire conjugation patterns — their forms must be memorized individually. The 7 verbs covered here (andare, fare, venire, dare, stare, sapere, uscire) are among the most common in everyday Italian. Mastering them unlocks a huge portion of real conversation.

Key Notes

Andare and fare are the most frequent irregular verbs — learn them first. Stare is used for health and temporary conditions: Come stai? Sto bene. (How are you? I am well.) Sapere followed by an infinitive means to know how to do something: So cucinare. (I know how to cook.) Dare has a written accent on the third-person singular dà to distinguish it from the preposition da (from/by). Uscire has a stem change between usc- (noi, voi) and esc- (all other persons).
