Indefinite Articles (Gli Articoli Indeterminativi)

The Lesson

What are indefinite articles?

Indefinite articles are the Italian equivalent of 'a' or 'an' in English. They are used before singular nouns to refer to something non-specific — 'a book', 'a friend', 'an idea'. In Italian, the form of the indefinite article changes depending on the gender of the noun (masculine or feminine) and the first sound of the word that follows it.

All indefinite articles

ArticleGenderUsed before...
unMasculinemost consonants and all vowels → un libro, un amico
unoMasculinez, s+consonant, gn, ps, pn, x, y → uno zaino, uno studente, uno gnomo
unaFeminineconsonants → una casa, una porta
un'Femininevowels (a, e, i, o, u) → un'amica, un'isola, un'ora

Examples in context

  • un libroa book (masculine, starts with 'l')
  • un amicoa friend (masculine, starts with vowel 'a')
  • uno zainoa backpack (masculine, starts with 'z')
  • uno studentea student (masculine, starts with 'st' = s+consonant)
  • uno gnomoa gnome (masculine, starts with 'gn')
  • una casaa house (feminine, starts with 'c')
  • una portaa door (feminine, starts with 'p')
  • un'amicaa friend (feminine, starts with vowel 'a')
  • un'isolaan island (feminine, starts with vowel 'i')

The rule for 'uno'

The article 'uno' is used before masculine nouns beginning with: z (uno zero, uno zoo), s followed by another consonant like st, sp, sc, sf, sn, sl, sm (uno studente, uno sport, uno specchio), gn (uno gnomo), ps (uno psicologo), pn (uno pneumatico), x (uno xilofono), y (uno yogurt — treated as a semivowel). This rule exists because these consonant clusters make it difficult to pronounce 'un' smoothly.

The rule for 'un' vs 'un''

For masculine nouns: use 'un' before both consonants and vowels (un libro, un amico). For feminine nouns: use 'una' before consonants and 'un'' (with apostrophe) before vowels (una casa, un'amica). Note that 'un'' with an apostrophe is ONLY feminine — never use it for masculine nouns.

Quick reference: when to use each article

Starts with...MasculineFeminine
regular consonant (b, c, d, f, g, l, m, n, p, r, t, v...)un → un librouna → una borsa
zuno → uno zainouna → una zebra
s + consonant (sp, st, sc, etc.)uno → uno studenteuna → una strada
gn, ps, pn, x, yuno → uno gnomouna → una gnosi (rare)
vowel (a, e, i, o, u)un → un amicoun' → un'amica

Important tip: no plural for indefinite articles

Unlike English, where 'some books' uses 'some', Italian indefinite articles (un, uno, una, un') have NO plural form. The plural is simply expressed without an article (some books = dei libri using partitive, or just libri). For A1 level, focus on mastering the singular forms first.

Memory trick

Think of 'uno' like the number 'uno' (one) — just as you say 'uno, due, tre' and not 'un, due, tre', the article 'uno' appears before those same tricky consonant clusters. If you would say 'uno' when counting before a word, use 'uno' as the article too!

Common mistakes to avoid

  • WRONG: un studente → CORRECT: uno studente (s+consonant needs 'uno')
  • WRONG: uno libro → CORRECT: un libro (regular consonant uses 'un')
  • WRONG: una amica → CORRECT: un'amica (feminine + vowel needs 'un'')
  • WRONG: un' amico → CORRECT: un amico (masculine + vowel uses 'un', never 'un'')
  • WRONG: uno zaino (fem.)'zaino' is masculine, so uno zaino is CORRECT
  • WRONG: una zebra → CORRECT: una zebra (feminine + z uses 'una', not 'uno')
