Tropea: The Town on a Cliff Above a Turquoise Sea

6 min read Β· Conoscere l'Italia

There is a photograph that every visitor to Tropea eventually takes: the view from the beach below, looking up at the old town perched on its golden sandstone cliff, the Tyrrhenian Sea spreading turquoise in the foreground. What makes the photo so striking is that both elements seem impossible β€” the sea is too blue, the cliff too golden, the town too perfectly Baroque. But it is all real, and Tropea has been doing this to visitors ever since the ancient Greeks first sailed past and noticed the cliffs.

Tropea is the jewel of the Costa degli Dei β€” the 'Coast of the Gods' β€” on the western edge of Calabria, the toe of Italy's boot. The name Costa degli Dei is modern, invented for tourism, but it captures something genuine: this stretch of coastline has an unusual luminosity, the sea running from pale turquoise near the shore through cobalt to deep indigo offshore, the air clear enough on summer evenings to see the outline of the Aeolian Islands on the horizon. Stromboli, the active volcano among the Aeolians, can sometimes be seen glowing at night β€” a distant orange point of light that makes the darkness feel inhabited.

Tropea's historic centre is a small marvel of Baroque architecture β€” tight streets, palazzi with carved stone balconies, small piazzas with views over the sea that stop you mid-sentence. The Cattedrale di Tropea, rebuilt in the Norman era and modified several times since, contains a famous painting, the Madonna di Romania, to whom locals have attributed miraculous interventions including the deflection of Allied bombs during World War II. Local tradition says that when the bombs fell on the city, the Madonna protected her town. Walking through Tropea's centro storico at dusk, when the light goes golden and the stone turns amber, it is easy to understand why people here feel that some protection hovers over the place.

Tropea's other claim to fame is entirely culinary: the Cipolla Rossa di Tropea, the Tropea red onion, is one of the most celebrated vegetables in Italy. It has IGP protected status (Indicazione Geografica Protetta), meaning only onions grown in the specific microclimate around Tropea can carry the name. The onions are sweet, not sharp β€” raw slices on a sandwich, or slow-cooked into a jam that goes with local nduja sausage, or pickled in balsamic vinegar. The entire Calabrian food culture β€” nduja, soppressata, bergamot, sword fish from the Strait of Messina β€” is extraordinary and still little known outside Italy.

Practical info

Tropea is on the west coast of Calabria, about 50 km south of Lamezia Terme (which has the nearest airport with good national and international connections). It is accessible by train on the Reggio Calabria–Naples line (Tropea has its own station). The town is best in June, early July, or September β€” August is extremely crowded and prices are high. The best beaches are Capo Vaticano to the south and the main Tropea beach below the cliff. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, built on a detached rock stack, is a 10-minute walk from the centre and gives extraordinary views. Combine with a day trip to the Aeolian Islands (ferry from Vibo Marina, 15 minutes away) β€” Stromboli, Lipari, and Panarea are all accessible by hydrofoil.
