Italian Health and Medical Vocabulary: Essential Words for Emergencies

7 min read · Vocabulary

No one plans to get sick or injured in Italy — but it happens. Knowing health and medical vocabulary means you can describe your symptoms clearly, understand what a doctor or pharmacist tells you, and communicate in an emergency. Italy has an excellent public health system (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale) and EU citizens benefit from it with a European Health Insurance Card. Even non-EU travellers will find Italian doctors professional and often English-speaking in major cities — but the more Italian you know, the better.

Emergency Numbers in Italy

Save these numbers before travelling: 112 is the single European emergency number (police, fire, ambulance). 118 is dedicated to medical emergencies. 113 is the police (Polizia di Stato). 115 is the fire brigade. Pharmacies display a green cross and a night-duty rota ('farmacia di turno') so you can always find one open. In any emergency, 'Aiuto!' means 'Help!' and will be understood everywhere.

The Italian pharmacy (farmacia) is a much more active institution than its equivalent in many other countries. Italian pharmacists are trained to provide significant medical advice and can often recommend treatments for minor ailments without a prescription. For a cold, a mild infection, an allergic reaction, or a skin problem, visiting a pharmacy before a doctor is often the faster and more practical choice. The pharmacist will ask 'Cosa ha?' (What is wrong with you?) and listen carefully — your Italian health vocabulary will make this conversation much easier.
