Ogni scarpa sa el so piede

Every shoe knows its own foot — each person knows their own troubles best. Outsiders cannot fully understand what another person carries; only the one who wears the shoe knows exactly where it pinches.

The Story Behind It

The shoemaking craft (calzatura) was one of the defining industries of the Venetian and Vicentino economy. The Brenta Riviera — the canal-lined stretch between Padova and Venice — became, from the early twentieth century onward, the centre of Italian luxury shoe production, supplying houses like Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton with handmade footwear. The Venetian Zattere and Rialto markets had been selling shoes since the medieval period, and the cobblers (calzolai) of the Veneto were celebrated for their ability to fit a shoe precisely to the individual foot. This technical knowledge — that only the foot wearing the shoe truly knows how it fits — made a natural metaphor for the impossibility of fully understanding another person's situation. The proverb is used to counsel against judgment, to acknowledge the privacy of suffering, and to discourage unsolicited advice. In the context of the mass emigration, it was often said of those who stayed at home: they could not know what it was to leave, just as those who left could not know what it was to stay. The shoe and the foot remain intimate strangers to everyone except the person walking in them.

The Brenta Riviera shoe manufacturing district (established in the early twentieth century) made footwear the emblematic craft of the Venetian hinterland; the proverb's shoemaking metaphor resonates deeply in a region where the calzatura industry remains a major employer.
