The family in the Veneto rural world was not merely a social unit but an economic enterprise: the casa colonica (farmhouse) was managed as a joint household, with grandfather, parents, children, and unmarried relatives all contributing labour, skills, and resources to the common goal of survival and gradually, prosperity. Inheritance was a serious matter governed by precise customs: the oldest son typically inherited the farm, while younger sons emigrated, entered the clergy, or found trades in the towns. The mass emigration of the late nineteenth century did not dissolve these family bonds — it extended them across the Atlantic, with chain migration creating entire Venetian communities in São Paulo's Colônia Veneta, in the Mendoza wine country of Argentina, and in the forests of British Columbia. Remittances flowed back to Veneto from these communities for decades, and today there are an estimated four million descendants of Venetian emigrants in Brazil alone, many of whom still speak a form of Venetian dialect. The economic miracle of postwar Veneto was almost entirely built on family firms (imprese familiari) that drew on exactly this principle: the family's shared labour, trust, and sacrifice were the capital that no bank could provide. Even today, the majority of Veneto's famous small enterprises are family businesses in their second or third generation.
The extended family (famiglia allargata) as the primary economic and social unit is documented throughout Venetian and Friulian rural history; the proverb reflects the specific experience of emigrant communities who maintained family ties across continents.
