The 'vecia' (old woman) represents both the elderly matriarch of the household who could no longer work outdoors in the cold, and the symbolic figure of the old year retreating before winter. In the Veneto farmhouses (case coloniche), the hearth (fogolar) was the physical and social centre of winter life: families gathered around it to shell corn, repair tools, tell stories, and make the fatìa (the evening work session by firelight) that kept the household productive even in the cold months. In Friuli, the fogolar was even more symbolically central, and Friulian identity is sometimes simply expressed as 'fuart di Friul' (strong from Friuli) — toughness built around the winter fire. The Prosecco and Amarone harvests, both completed in October, gave the month a festive character too: the new wine was tasted, the old wine was celebrated, and the family's survival for another year was marked.
Part of the Venetian folk calendar system, this proverb was recorded in agricultural almanacs of the Treviso and Padova provinces; the fogolar (hearth) in Friulian culture has quasi-sacred status as the centre of family identity.
