In Sicily, where loyalty was a social currency and betrayal a mortal wound, choosing companions was a matter of survival rather than preference. The criminal underworld made this lesson lethal — association with the wrong person could bring the attention of rivals, the law, or worse. But the proverb predates organised crime: in the feudal society of the Bourbon era, attaching oneself to a corrupt landlord's circle, a dishonest merchant, or a loose-tongued neighbour could ruin a family's standing or finances. Sicilian mothers used it to warn daughters away from unsuitable suitors and sons away from criminal acquaintances. It survives today because the underlying wisdom is universal — but in Sicily it carries the particular weight of a culture that learned, through generations of hard experience, that the wrong friend is no friend at all.
