Manu lavata è manu biniditta

A washed hand is a blessed hand. Cleanliness — physical, moral, and financial — is its own form of grace. The proverb praises honesty and the clean conscience that comes from not soiling one's hands with dishonest dealings.

The Story Behind It

This proverb has two registers in Sicilian culture. At the literal level, it reflects the value of cleanliness in a society where hard physical labour — in the fields, the sulphur mines, the fishing boats — left its marks on the body. A worker who cleaned himself before sitting at table or entering a home showed respect for himself and others. At the moral level, the washed hand is the hand that has not taken a bribe, received stolen goods, or been complicit in wrongdoing. The blessing is real: a clean conscience allows a man to sleep, to look people in the eye, to be trusted. In communities where corruption was ever-present, choosing not to participate was genuinely radical. The proverb honours that choice.

Common throughout Sicily; particularly resonant in communities marked by the intersection of poverty and opportunity for corruption, such as port towns and mining areas.
