La notti porta cunsigliu, lu jornu porta l'azzioni

The night brings counsel, the day brings action — each has its proper function. Night is for reflection, weighing, deciding; day is for acting on what you decided. Mixing them — acting at night when impulsive, reflecting all day when you should be acting — produces poor results.

The Story Behind It

This proverb is the Sicilian expansion of the simpler 'la notte porta consiglio,' adding the crucial second half: action must follow reflection. The person who only reflects, who uses the night's counsel as an excuse to delay action indefinitely, is as mistaken as the one who acts without thinking. The Sicilian practical mind could not accept pure contemplation as a terminal state — reflection was always in the service of action, never its replacement. The distinction between night and day was also literal in the agricultural and maritime world: night was for rest, planning, and talking, while the working day required full commitment and decision. To think at night and act by day was the natural rhythm of a person well-calibrated to the world.

An expansion of the classic 'la notte porta consiglio,' adding the active second clause unique to the Sicilian version. 'Notti' = notte, 'cunsigliu' = consiglio, 'jornu' = giorno, 'azzioni' = azione. Reflects the practical Sicilian balance between reflection and action.
