He who wakes up to find his friend gone is left alone — those who are slow to value or maintain a friendship lose it, and find themselves isolated once the friend has moved on. It warns against taking good relationships for granted.
The mass emigration from Sicily between 1880 and 1930 — when over a million Sicilians left for the Americas, and later in the 1950s for northern Italy and Germany — made this proverb devastatingly literal. Villages were emptied of young men; entire networks of friendship, work, and mutual support dissolved as people departed, often never to return. Those who hesitated too long, who did not emigrate when their friends did, found themselves in communities hollowed out of their generation. But the proverb also applied to the smaller betrayals of everyday social life: the friend neglected during a period of personal prosperity, the cousin not visited during illness, the neighbour whose help had been taken for granted. When the friend left — whether for America or simply for another circle — the one who had not maintained the bond found themselves suddenly and painfully alone.
Closely tied to the history of Sicilian emigration and the dissolution of village social networks. The proverb expresses the pain felt by those who stayed as well as those who lost friends through neglect. Found in Sicilian folk proverb collections of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Warning someone who neglects a loyal friend

After a friend who was taken for granted has moved away

Reflecting on the loneliness of those who stayed when others emigrated
Erano partiti tutti. Mio nonno era rimasto e non aveva capito quanto contassero quei rapporti. Cu s'perta all'amicu luntanu resta — e lui non parlava di altro.
They had all left. My grandfather had stayed and had not understood how much those bonds mattered. He who wakes up to find his friend gone is left alone — and he spoke of nothing else.
Encouraging someone to maintain a distant friendship

Write to her, even just a message. He who wakes up to find his friend gone is left alone — do not wait until it is too late.
