Chi si contenta godi

He who is content enjoys — contentment is the condition for genuine enjoyment. The person who is never satisfied, always wanting more than what they have, cannot enjoy what is in front of them. The ability to be satisfied with enough is itself a form of mastery.

The Story Behind It

The Sicilian distinction between 'contentment' and 'resignation' was important: this proverb did not counsel passivity or acceptance of injustice, but the ability to find genuine satisfaction in what one had. In a culture of material scarcity, the person who could enjoy a simple meal, take pleasure in the evening light, find happiness in family rather than in accumulation — this person lived well. The proverb was used to counter the restless dissatisfaction that drove people to make reckless decisions, to risk what they had in pursuit of what they lacked, to be miserable in the present because the future was not yet arrived. It paired with 'la meravigghia di ogni jornu' — the daily wonder — as a philosophical stance toward the ordinary.

A classic Sicilian and Italian proverb about contentment as the precondition for genuine enjoyment. Reflects the philosophical tradition of finding sufficiency in what one has rather than perpetual pursuit of more. Widely used across all of Sicily.
